"As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the person."
Proverbs 27: 19 NLT
Water, it is cool and refreshing to someone who is thirsty. It, also, has the ability to reflect the inner need of a person’s heart. Everytime you and I look into a pond, stream, or river, the face that everyone views reflects off the surface. Water doesn’t lie. That reflection accurately demonstrates whether we are sad, happy, bitter, or gracious. The facial lines, wrinkles, and beauty spots jump back at us. Water can’t change the image to suit our imagination or desires.
Just like the reflection on the water, our hearts demonstrate to the world our heartfelt need. A bitter heart reflects a need to forgive an erroring partner, friend, or spouse. Because of that bitterness, the ugly image reflecting on our face destroys all hope of reconciliation. A merry heart free of anger, bitterness, envy, or jealousy portrays an image of love, friendship, and forgiveness. With a heart bursting with God’s love, our faces shine with God’s glory.
If you desire to change your reflected image, then change your heart. For your heart reflects your inner desires, code of conduct, and your relationships. Love, joy, peace, and good will to all people attract the needy, friendly, and hurting. People seek the company of gracious companions. Only a face mirroring the image of God’s love, peace, and forgiveness to all mankind can change the world around us. Only a perfect image reflected from the face of Jesus Christ can shine from our hearts to the hurting world around us. The problem with you and I this morning, will we exchange our empty hearts for the heart of Jesus Christ?
